What is cervical cancer?
Cancer affecting the cervix (lower part of the uterus, above vagina).
The primary cause of cervical cancer is infection with certain types of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is transmitted sexually.
Risk Factors :
Risk increases with
• early sexual intercourse
or >3 sexual partners
• >10 years use of oral contraceptive
• first delivery before age of 17
• high parity (≥7 full term pregnancies)
• smoking
• lower socioeconomic status
Symptoms :
mostly asymptomatic or presents with
postmenopausal bleeding
vaginal discharge
post-coital bleeding
abdominal pain

HPV Vaccination
Do pap smear every 3 years
Test for Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
Pap Smear
The doctor will collect a few cells and mucus from the cervix and the area around it.
Offered to all sexually active women between the ages of 30 and 65 years. However, those who are sexually active but less than 30 years are encouraged to come for screening.
HPV Vaccination
The HPV vaccine helps to protect against at least HPV type 16 and 18 that cause the greater risk of cervical cancer. It is advisable to take this vaccine before you are sexually active.
